CHARACTER INFO

Character Name: Lin Beifong
Character Canon: Legend of Korra

History: Here.

AU History: Lin grew up without knowing who her father was, just like her half-sister, Sujin. Their mother was always busy and gave them a lot of freedom, something that ended up making Lin feel like she needed to do things to make her proud. That was why, following her steps, she became a member of the Swords of the Savior, wanting to make sure there was no crimes in the streets of Unions. She tried her best to climb ranks and get the recognition she desired to make her mother pay more attention to her. Her sister, however, went for a more rebellious route, befriending some shady people from Union. Lin, of course, was far from liking that and, out of love for her sister, constantly tried to convince her to break of her relationship with those people. It didn’t work at all.

One day, while doing her rounds around town, she witnessed an attempted robbery taking place. Lin went to intervene only to find out that her sister and her friends were the ones involved. Lin tried to reason with her but it was useless: Sujin pushed her away, causing her to fall through the shop’s window. That incident gave her two long scares on the side of her face.

Afterwards, her mother, not wanting to ruin the family reputation, made Lin drop the charges against her sister and made her leave the family house to live with some distant relatives in a house located in a part of the residential district on the other side of the city. This caused Lin to become even more focused on her role as a member of the Swords of the Savior, never wanting to allow any crime to be overlooked. She’s known as a very hard worked and someone who makes sure that rules are obeyed.

Lin started to develop her Enlightened abilities when she was young, the same type as her mother, who trained her through most of her childhood. Her mother also helped her bond with her first Pokemon, a male Aron that her mother insisted she called Rocky. To this day, Lin keeps Rocky as her must trusted companion and trusts him with her life. Rocky was the only thing she kept by her side after what happened with her mother and sister, since she cut all ties with them after the incident. She believes Pokemon to be far more trusty than humans. In her eyes, a well-trained Pokemon is supposed to do what they are taught without any doubts or special treatments towards others.

For Lin, untrained Pokemon have the potential to be extremely dangerous. They need to be controlled and taught what is right and what is wrong in order to have them living with humans.

Canon Personality: Lin’s personality in canon is a hard one to lay out. She’s a tough person that has a serious look on her face most of the time. She takes her responsibility very serious. Her working as a police officer in Republic City came from her wanting to impress her mother. She works hard, to the extreme where her work is her whole life and refuses the idea of marrying or having children, things that would steer her away from her job. Following the rules is something she takes very seriously, so she won’t be happy with anyone that goes around breaking the law (even if it is for a good reason) and will punish them no matter who they are. She’s not the kind of person that will give anyone special treatment, she doesn’t care if they are a very important or powerful person, if you break the law you deserve to pay the consequences. Despite this, she is willing to go behind the law if someone she considers a companion and friend is in trouble.

If she dislikes someone or doesn’t agree with something, she will always clearly voice her thoughts or show them through actions. She’s not the kind of person that cooperates easily if things don’t go her way, but she understands that sometimes she has to accept things she doesn’t agree with in order to accomplish greater good. She’s incredibly loyal to those she cares about and considers her friend. Of course, getting to the point where she cares about someone that much is no easy task, but it can happen. In canon, she has been shown to be willing to give up her position as a Chief of Police to be able to rescue her men, who had been captured by Amon, by doing everything she could outside of the law. She was also ready to lose her bending if it meant that Tenzin and his family would be able to get away from Amon as well. She takes responsibility for those that work under her and she cares greatly for the safety of the people in Republic City.

When it comes to her family, that’s water from a different pond. Lin refuses to talk about her family outside the fact that she’s Toph Beifong’s daughter. She doesn’t know who her father is and she has an important conflict with her sister, whom she refuses to even acknowledge. She blames her sister’s action when they were young as the reason their mother retired as a Chief of Police and since then, they hadn’t spoken. She’s simply not comfortable with talking about personal issues, more so when it comes to her complicated family situation.

If Lin holds a grudge, it’s incredibly hard for her to let it go. The situation with her sister is a clear example of this, since she hasn’t even visited her nephews because of that. And her breakup with Tenzin caused the two of them to have a tense and awkward relation for a long time. Her anger is a serious thing as well. When Tenzin broke up with her, she almost destroyed the Air Temple Island out of anger because he broke up with her to be with someone else who actually wanted to have children, not like Lin who wanted to have nothing to do with them. Even to this day, Lin is awkward and unsure of what to do with or around little kids and she also despises the common attitude and bratty-ness that comes with the adolescent years. Despite this, deep down she does have a kinder side, though it’s very hard to have it come up.

AU Deviation:Lin’s personality wouldn’t change very much. She will still be worried and concerned about her job, to the point where it completely takes over her life. Her burden concerning following her mother’s footsteps wouldn’t be so big, since Toph wouldn’t be one of the member of the Avatar’s group that helped end the 100 Year War in this setting. This means that she’s not so worried about climbing ranks, but still takes the job seriously enough after what happened with Sujin. Leaving Union will be hard for her, not because she doesn’t trust the rest of her companions but because she wants to be there to help keep the city in order.

It takes her a long time to trust people and even bonding with Pokemon will be a little hard for her. She’s weary of wild Pokemon as opposed to Union’s most domestic ones, but if she believes that a wild Pokemon has the potential of becoming a trusty companion, then she will bond with them and train them with stern determination and discipline.

Canon Abilities: In canon, Lin is a very skilled Earthbender who managed to dominate both sub-classes of bending: metalbending and seismic sense, the first allowing him to bend the particles of earth that are inside metals and the latter allows her to “see” with her feet, using earthbending to feel the vibrations in the earth.

Enlightened Abilities: As an Enlightened, Lin will be a Rock/Steel type and his special skill is Master of Training.

While just starting out, Lin will have access to some basic earthbending, such as raising rocks in the air, creating barriers and such. Her earthbending will become more elaborate and stronger as she levels up, being able to do more things with it that she couldn’t do before, such as Master Level Earthbending, which includes making a rock or crystal armor and bend other earth-based materials.

After her first evolution, Lin would have access to the seismic sense. It allows her to use earthbending to see and feel the vibrations on the earth. It also means that she can feel tunnels nearby with it and move around in complete darkness. To have access to it, she needs to have direct contact to the ground with her feet.

Her second evolution would unlock her ability to metalbend. Thanks to her seismic sense, Lin will later be able to “see” the small earth particles that exist in metal and be able to bend it to her will. Of course, purest forms of metal would be impossible for her to bend.

Starter Pokémon: Aron (level 12).

Notes/Special Considerations: None.

SAMPLES

First-Person: A couple canon personality examples here and here. The one with 10 comments in one thread with one character is here.

Third-Person: Every morning it was always the same routine. Waking up, feeding Rocky, take a shower, put on her uniform and go make her rounds around town with her trusty Pokemon right at her side. Lin was never bothered by it, though. She enjoyed the routine and having things organized. If something out of the norm happened it usually meant trouble and while she dealt with it well, she’d rather keep things peaceful. Sadly, that morning wasn’t going to be an average one.

Her Pokemon, Rocky, always had a great ear and he seemed to hear something that caught his attention.

“What’s going on, Rocky? Show me the way.”

He nodded, obedient as always and began to run. Lin followed him close and soon enough, they got to a store where some people, a young boy and an older woman, were arguing and immediately got inside.

“Lin Beifong, member of the Swords of the Savior. What’s the problem?”

As soon as she introduced herself, the boy’s face got white and he began to run, crashing into Lin and getting out of the door. She didn’t have to be a genius to know that the boy was not innocent at all if he ran like that. She wasted no second to act and neither did Rocky, whom Lin had trained so well that he could understand what to do with just a gesture from his master. Either way, the boy still had a head start yet she wasn’t planning on letting him get away. She used her Enlightened abilities to raise a rock wall in front of the boy, who crashed into it and fell to the ground, giving Lin enough time to catch up to him.

“Running from authorities is a crime itself, did you know that?” She said, frowning and grabbing the boy by the collar of his shirt after making the rock wall go away. “We are going back to that shop and you’ll tell me what happened.”

Questions:
-What would you say the role of Pokémon is in your life?
Pokemons are companions that should be trusted as equally as any human teammate. A well raised Pokemon will follow every command and be loyal to those around them without thinking it twice, something not every human can do.

-What do you feel your role in Union is?
As a member of the Swords of the Savior, it is my duty to make sure Union is a safe place for all its citizens.

-To what lengths would you go to rescue your allies if they were lost in the wilderness?
I would do whatever it is needed to help them. My allies are of great importance to me and I take their safety very seriously.

-What do you look for in the Pokémon with whom you bond?
Loyalty and a strong will. They have to be ready to lay down everything for the safety of the people in Union.

-What do you think your Pokémon respect most about you?
Perhaps that I treat them as equals. Just because they cannot talk it doesn’t mean they are inferior to us humans.

-A human has attacked a wild Pokémon who retaliates in defense. How do you respond and whom do you defend?
I would ask the human about what happened and evaluate the situation. Pokemon don’t usually attack without a reason, so it’s most likely that it was the human who was at fault here. But I could never say for sure without knowing more about the situation.

-You are alone and bereft of your Pokémon allies, upon what strengths do you rely on to see yourself safely home?
Mostly I would rely on my Enlightened abilities. But even without them I have decent survival skills taught by my mother, I could survive and return safely.

-What would you say is your greatest duty, and why?
Protecting the people from Union. There’s always the possibility of bad things happening, either from inside the walls or outside and in case that happens, we have to be ready to act and defend each other.

-When encountering a rare and powerful Pokémon, what is most important? Researching it, bonding with it, or defeating it? Why?
Bonding with it would be the logical choice for me. You never know when such a powerful ally might be needed.

-In your eyes, what is absolutely unforgivable.
Something that is absolutely unforgivable… Betrayal. You cannot betray your people, no matter what happens.
